Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting

The Yacht Club de Monaco (YCM) has unveiled an autonomous green hydrogen pontoon ahead of the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge (1-6 July 2024).

The Yacht Club de Monaco has long been intensifying its initiatives to protect the environment and to be in line with the sustainability objectives of the United Nations and successful in the collective initiative “Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting”

Prince Albert II of Monaco was invited on 21 February to discover the first autonomous green hydrogen pontoon, which will fill 30 cylinders and supply eight teams with hydrogen for the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge (1 – 6 July 2024). “The Monaco Energy Boat Challenge was created 11 years ago. Today I'm happy to see how far we've come. Even with limited resources, it is possible today to produce green hydrogen,” commented Bernard d'Alessandri, General Secretary of the Yacht Club de Monaco. With the aim of making Monaco the spearhead of responsible pleasure boating, the YCM presented the system in the presence of numerous authorities, including Céline Caron-Dagioni, Government Councillor, Minister of Infrastructure, Environment and 'Urban planning; Patrice Cellario, Government Councilor, Minister of the Interior; Armelle Roudaut-Lafon, Director of Maritime Affairs; Olivier Wenden, Vice President of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation; Marco Casiraghi, engineer and promoter of the event; and Francesco Prazzo, CEO of SBM Offshore. This pontoon, as can be seen from the press release, in addition to producing green hydrogen from renewable energy, reduces the carbon footprint of the event. It has also been improved with floating solar panels, more batteries and a remote control system. The YCM, for the record, has already been applying a green policy for some years in the management of the property that hosts it, such as, for example, recycling the pool water with an innovative technology, treating 1 million liters from June 2023. These initiatives must be understood as exemplary activities capable of promoting responsible yachting and environmental awareness.
